An Oswego High School student won a bronze medal in the World Shotokan Karate Association championship last month. The event was held in Liverpool, England.
Kasside Leasure is sixteen now and a junior in high school, but she first started learning karate at the age of four through the Oswegoland Park District.
Kasside's mom Kathy says to qualify to compete at the world championship, Kasside had to be ranked as a top competitor by participating in tournaments around the country. Kasside says the karate she does is about self protection.
Kasside participates in sparring at competition, but there are other events as well. In sparring, you are trying to score points by landing hits on an opponent.
In addition to winning a bronze medal Kasside tells WSPY news that she had some time for sightseeing while she was in England for the competition.
